A Guide to Adhesives Print E-mail

3D Foam Adhesives

Forms: A piece/strip of foam with permanent adhesive on both upper and lower sides of foam. Pads are available in a range of colours, sizes and thicknesses.

Benefits: Add dimension to your projects

Downside: Can be bulky and visible. Try positioning away from edges. You will need to make allowances for bulky pages in your albums.

Adhesive Dots

Forms: Variety of sizes and thicknesses supplied on a roll of paper. Availalbe in clear or slightly coloured.

Benefits: Great for metal and slightly heavy objects. Also good for uneven surfaces. Use with items such as gems, buttons and beads

Downside: At this stage they are only available in the one shape which can be restricting.

Craft Glue

Forms: Generally water based PVA.

Benefits: An acid free affordable adhesive. Dries fast and clear. Dry with a high shine and can be used as a varnish.

Glazes

Forms: Thick with a clear high shine finish.

Benefits: Great for use with transparent embellishments when applied thinly. Watercolours and dye based inks can be mixed for a tint when applying to a visible element on your projects.

Glue Pens

Forms: Contains wet glue which is dispensed through the pen tip by gently squeezing. Several different nib widths available. Some varieties are permanent when wet and then become repositionable when tacky.

Benefits: Great for hard to reach places and fine elements such as glitter.

Glue Sticks

Forms: Sticks are available in several different sizes

Benefits: One of the most afforable adhesives. Not all glue sticks are acid free so make sure you check the label.

Downside: Can cause thin materials including paper to buckle and go lumpy. Also may not be strong enough to hold some items which may eventually start to peel away.

Metal Glues

Forms: Wet adhesive often in a pen dispenser. Glue will dry slowly and quite hard

Downside: Due to the weight of metal objects, it's not always an easy task attaching them.

Photo Tabs

Forms: Pieces, often square, of double sided permanent tape. Individual tabs supplied on a roll and in dispensers.

Benefits: Thin enough to be almost undetectable.

Downside: Generally dry opaque and aren't good for transparencies including vellum.

Repositionable Adhesives

Forms: Pen dispenser, aerosol

Benefits: Great during the design phase of your projects and residue can be rubbed off with finger.

Tape Runners

Forms: Many different varieties. Often a dispenser with an adhesive strip or small dots. Some are disposable, others refillable. Some are permanent and others repositionable.

Benefits: Quick and easy to apply.

Downside: Be gentle when using on photos as some dispensers may leave a slight indentation.
